What’s in a Name?

In the case of El Portal, it is everything.

El Portal, meaning “The Entrance,” is a gateway to another era. When visitors step through our front gates, we want them to journey into another time—where the present fades away, time slows down, and history comes alive. El Portal is our interpretation of an Arts and Crafts hotel from the early 20th century.

What is the Arts and Crafts Movement?

The Arts and Crafts movement flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, championing handcrafted, high-quality objects and rejecting mass production. Its goal was to restore dignity to craft and design while emphasizing simplicity, honesty in materials, and a deep appreciation for natural forms.

Origins and Philosophy

The movement arose in response to the adverse effects of the Industrial Revolution, which led to the decline of traditional craftsmanship and the rise of low-quality, mass-produced goods. Arts and Crafts proponents sought to revive the beauty and integrity of handmade objects. The movement inspired the formation of many craft communities and associations—130 in Britain, most established between 1895 and 1905. However, William Morris, a key figure in the movement, was preoccupied with socialism and had little direct involvement with these groups.

Key Principles

  • Focus on Quality and Simplicity: Designers and artisans aim to create functional, beautiful objects that showcase the natural qualities of materials.
  • Social Reform: Many believed that handcrafted goods could improve the lives of both their makers and users by fostering a sense of purpose and connection.
  • Nature as Inspiration: Natural forms and materials played a central role in design, reinforcing a deep appreciation for the environment.
  • Bridging Art and Craft: The movement sought to eliminate the divide between fine art and applied art, recognizing craftsmanship in all aspects of life.

Influence and Legacy

The Arts and Crafts movement laid the foundation for later design movements, including Art Nouveau and the Bauhaus movement, which continued emphasizing craftsmanship and thoughtful design.

Examples of Arts and Crafts Design

  • Furniture: Simple yet solid construction using natural materials like oak and walnut.
  • Textiles: Hand-woven fabrics with natural dyes and understated patterns.
  • Metalwork: Hand-forged metal objects, including lamps, hardware, and jewelry.
  • Architecture: Buildings designed with natural materials, clean lines, and a focus on functionality.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged from a growing awareness that society needed to prioritize integrity in manufacturing. Its leaders sought to create beautiful objects that honored craftsmanship and humanity.

In designing and building El Portal, we have sought to adhere to these principles, creating a space that serves as a doorway to the past for our guests. We invite you to enter the portal and experience the timeless beauty of the Arts and Crafts era.
