Just Say NO!
Be Careful about What You Sign
In a recent city council meeting, a disruptive group of Sedonans opposed the city’s temporary, 2 year visionary “Safe Place to Park” initiative. They paint a picture of doom and the need to stop this effort to bolster their claim the entertainment facility that went bankrupt over 20 years ago be resurrected.
The city is currently pursuing affordable apartments on a small portion of the land backing to Sedona Summit, but the rest of the 44 acres is to be master planned with substantial community input. So, what is their hidden agenda?
Using the “referendum” process to attempt to reverse the decision by the city council to pursue this 2-year “Safe Place to Park” is an end-run to the general political process of supporting or not supporting your preferred candidates for city council when they run or run for re-election. In other words, they don’t like our system of democracy but want to use intimidation and self-righteous chest pounding to rile up enough voters to override their elected officials.
Instead, they propose bringing back an abandoned outdoor venue that went bankrupt over 20 years ago. No one is saying that their vision won’t be considered in the master planning process of the Cultural Park property. They will have plenty of opportunity to prove that that’s a good use of the bulk of the real estate in the old Cultural Park and the financial viability of such an endeavor. Or do they want to kill the “safe place to park” because they just don’t want the city involved in attempting to mitigate the current housing crisis and accompanying employee shortage?
This group is now circulating a petition to override the Planning and Zoning Commission (P and Z) and City Council decisions, aiming to divert Western GateWay’s development from its intended public benefit to their interests.
